The ratepayers of Balclutha, by _94 votes 64, have decided in favour of a load of £IOOO, or such lesser sum as may be required, for the purpose of erecting municipal saleyards. There were two sites under offer, and a poll on these resulted in favour of the present Crown yards being bought. Mr Beattie, Government Railway Locomotive Superintendent, presented a return to the Midland Railway Commissioners showing that the value of the rolling stock when purchased by the Midland Company was about £24,000, and that its value when Government seized the line was between £16,000 and £17.000.
In the days when a decreasing birth rate is causing so much alarm to those who have the welfare of the colony at heart, it is cheering to note that one township, and that a towniip on the coast, is on the up grade. learn on very good authoriiy that at Greenstone there is a young baby in almost every bouse, and that last week some forty or fifty of them were awaiting vaccination at the hands of Dr Scott.
The following cablegram from Wellington was published in the Melbourne ‘Argus ’ last week It is understood in well-informed circles that knighthoods will be conferred by H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall and York during his visit to the colony upon the Premier (Mr Seddon), the Postmaster-General (Mr J. G Ward), and the ex-Minister oi Lands (Mr John M’Kenzie.)
