SHOULD THE PREMIER TAKE A TITLE?

A Supposed Pilot Balloon.

Christchurch, This Day. Commenting on the possibility of Mr Seddon being knighted by the Duke of York, the Lyttelton Times says : —“For ourselves we think the Premier would-be disinclined to accept a distinction which in the colonies is considered a very small honour indeed, and which seems by some strange fatality to blight the public career of every politician who ventures to take it. Besides, he has already received a much greater honour in Privy Councillorship, and if the Duke has no higher gift to bestow, Mr Seddon would be wise to retain the simple title under which he has won the confidence and affection of the people. With Messrs

Ward and M‘Kenzie the case is somewhat different.”

The article, which is looked on as a more or less inspired “feeler,” explains the difference in regard to Messrs Ward and M'Kcnzie, and concludes '■ —“ If there is to be a further distribution of honours we should certainly like to see Mr Eolleston and Captain Eussell included in the list. Both these gentlemen have fairly won their spurs, and their promotion would be hailed with the liveliest satisfaction by every section of the community.”
