THE ROYAL VISIT.

At the Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening the following telegrams and correspondence in regard to the Eoyal Visit and display to be made on the occasion were dealt with: —

Prom Mr John Holmes Executive Uummissioncr stating that in view of the general expressed desire thah> each provincial district should be represented at the chief centres, I presume you will join Wellington in making special display here during the visit of their Eoyal Highnesses, who arrive on the 17th Juno. The Mayor of Nelson has already telegraphed—Nelson will show her loyalty in the direction indicated. From Town Cleric, Hokitika, stating that lie,is directed by his Council to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 3rd instant with reference to the proposed decorations in honor of the Eoyal visit,,and in reply lam to inform you that this Council is favorably disposed towards the proposal, provided thelothcr boroughs and counties on the Coast would co-operate. My Council would prefer, however, that if Westland is to be represented in the decorations it should be at Christchurch, as Westland is more intimately connected with Canter-

bury.” Town Clerk, Westland County Council stating that with reference to the question that this district should bo representeo in the celebrations in connection with the visit of the Duke and Duchess ol Cornwall, I am directed to ask what action your Council purposes taking. With a view to united action the County Chairman suggests that the West Coast (represented' by Westland and Grey districts) should erecs a bay on the route of thi Christchurch procession, Canterbury being suggested from the early day associations of.th,ut disir.ct and Westland. The pru-

From Westport Council stating that if cannot contribute anything to cost oi proposed arch at Christchurch or Wellington.

Mr Thomas favored £25 being granted but favored it being termed a West Const arch, and he moved accordingly to be erected in Christchurch.

Seconded by Mr Gioseking. Mr M'Lean favored Wellington which was the seat of Government.

Seconded by Mr Sheedy who thought Wellington was the better place for its erection. Mr Steer did not see what good would come of the expenditure. He favored a local expenditure on some useful article commemorative of the Eoyal visit. The Mayor favored the arch being erected at Christchurch. The County Council and Harbor Board were willing to contribute and the Coast had much to thank Canterbury for. Mr Joyce held that the town had nothing to thank Christchurch for. Mr Petrie was favorable to some local memorial being erected that would be useful and commemorable of the visit, but if the arch was to be erected he favored Wellington. Mr Bignell favored a local expenditure, but if the arch was erected he favored Christchurch. The amendment was then put and carried. Mr Steer favored an expenditure upon a cluster of lights in town, and moved accordingly. , Mr Bignell seconded. Mr Joyce thought it would he folly to erect a light. He favored a fountain. Mr Sheedy was willing to see three times the amount spent upon a cluster of lights to be termed “The i'ork Light.” The amendment was put and carried Unanimously.
