INSTALLATION OF MAYOR AND COUNCILLORS.

The adjourned mooting for the installation of Mayor and Councillors was held at noon to-day in the Town Hall.

The Town Clerk lead the declaration of the poll, and Messrs M'Lean, Sheedy, Thomas, Bignell, Joyce, Gieseking and Petrie, who were present, read the usual declaration and took their seats. Before retiring from office Mr Matheson said: Allow me to congratulate you on your re-election as Councillors. lam glad that the old Council, with one exception, have been again returned after a most keenly contented election in which there were It) candidates for 9 seats. The interest taken in the election by the ratepayers shows a healthy stato of Municipal activity which must conduce to the progress of the town. I have great pleasure in welcoming the new member, Mr J. G. Thomas, ta iho Cotmcil table. He is, however, an old and tried friend, having in former years served as both Councillor and Mayor.

I trust, gentlemen, that the coming year will he a prosperous one for the town and district, and that this Council will work together for the general good, sinking all friction in the endeavour to extend our environment, and expend our loan monies to the best advantage. I will not weary you with a long address on this occasion, hut a short review of our loan expenditure up-to-date Avill not be out of place. DBAINAGE WOEKS. Since October last considerable progress lias been made with the drainage works. Detail surveys, plans and sections have been made of over six miles of sewers, of which 2 miles have been constructed, including Thomson street, Hinchley Lane, Tainui, Murray, Alexander, Puketahi, and Chapel streets. Johnson street outfall tunnel has been driven through, and the main sewer in Gresson street is being pushed on as quickly as possible, the delay in obtaining pipes being the cause of hindrance. The total sum expended on these works is £2,281, leaving an unexpended balance of £'1,3311 to complete the drainage. WATEE SUPPLY. Detail surveys, plans and estimates have been made of the reservoir, pumping station and retriculation, at a cost of £l5O, and they have been forwarded to Mr C. Napier-Bell, our consulting Engineer for his approval. GAS WOEKS. The Gas Works cost, including stock and expenses of transfer £17,000, or £I,OOO more than the appropriation, but they have proved to be a splendid investment, the profits for the half-year being £719 14s 7d. The consumption is rapidly increasing so much so, that a larger gas holder, new retort benches, and an extension of mains, must be provided for in llie near future. STEKET IJIPEOVEJIENTS. We have expended under this heading £633 for broken metal, street curbing &c. and wo are pledged to contracts in Herbert and Skakespears streets to the amounts of £IOOO, leaving a balance for bridges and streets of £3,542. Plans for the bridges are in course of preparation. I cannot concludo my remarks without complimenting Mr. Lord and Mr.Warnes and t'io rest of our permanent staff for the way they perform their respeciive duties.

ltesolvcd that Cr Petrie and the Town Clerk instul the Mayor. Cr Sheedy said it gave him much pleasure to be there, and testify to the excellent work done by the Mayor in the past, and he wished him a prosperous year of ofiice. Mr Thomas said that in renewing his acquaintance with the Council after many ycors, he was also desirous to bear his testimony to the character of (he Mayor elect. He had done good service in the past, and would he was convinced do so in the future.

The Mayor was then installed, and the meeting terminated.
