NEW ZEALAND'S POPULATION.

General Return of the Late Census

Increase of 146,781 in Ten Years

The Registrar-General (Mr E. J. Yon Dadelzen) has completed the preliminary enumeration of the "results of the late census for the whole colony—subject, that is, to a final re vision—and we are indebted to him for the following tables :

Preliminary census results for the :51st March, 1901, made up from supervising enumerators' reports (exclusive of Maoris):— Population, Population, 1901. 1891. Counties 417,990 352,097 Boroughs 350,775 270,313 Shipping . 3,521 3,305 Adjacent islands & lighthouses ... 939 G3G Chatham Islands... 200 258 Kermadec Islands 8 19 773,439 026,058 (Increase for ten years, 140,781, or 23*42 per cent for the period. The comparison is made for the ten-year period for the sake of uniformity, because the Australian colonies took no census in 1890.) SUMMARY. North Island ... 391,143 281,455 Middle & Stewart's Islands ... 382,082 314,913 Chatham Islands... 200 271 Kermadec Islands 8 19 773,439 620,058' The estimated population calculated from the natural increase (excess of births over deaths), and the excess of arrivals over departures, amounts to 775,122 persons, or 1093 more than the preliminary census figures. Preliminary return, made up from enumerators' reports, of population of che North, South, and Stewart Island (subject to revision), 1886, 1891, 1890, 1901 (excluding Maoris) : Increase Numeri- Per--1880. 1891 cal centage j

The characteristic of this enumeration I is a noticeable aggregation in the centres and dairy farming districts. The considerable degree of dislocation of population has given rise to some unfavourable surmises by the press, but it will bo observed that the estimate is closely realised. The movement from the South Island to the North still continues.

Adding the Maoris to the Europeans we have a total population in New Zealand of 11G,290. It is interesting to compare tie European population of New Zealand with that of tho larger sister color es. The figures are—New Zealand, 773,480 ; New South l,:iG:} ! 232 ; Victoria, 1,196,874. Comparing the increases in the three colonies during the past ten years we find that while the j opulation of New Zealand has increased by 110,711 there has only been an increiS3 in Victoria of 05,469. In New South Wales, with a population almost double our own, the increase has only been 229,995.
