UNITED STATES CRUISER BROOKLYN.
The United States cruiser Brooklyn, which is now in Melbourne to take part in tho celebratsons in connection with the opening of the Commonwealth Parliament is to visit New Zealand before returning to Manila.
The Brooklyn is the big American armoured cruiser who tall smoke-stacks, resembling those of a factory chimney, were a conspicuous object in the great naval 1 review at gpithead in 1897, in connection with tho late Queen's Jubilee. She is a steel-built vessel of 9215 tons displacement and 18,069 horse-power, and was built at Philadelphia in 1895 at a cost of £613,583. She carries armour ranging from 3in to 6in in thickness ; her batteries comprise eight 8-inch and twelve 5-inch quick-firing guns, twelve 6-pounder and four one-pounder guns, four machine guns, and two guns for boats cr landing parties. There are also four torpedo-tubes. The Brooklyn carries 516 men, and can steam nearly 22 knots an hour.
