Eeceived this day at 11,15 a.m. Melbouene May 15. The hoisting of tho " Union Jack " at the Exhibition yesterday was the signal for a similar operation throughout the schools in tho Commonwealth. Seven thousand schools representing six hundred and fifty thousand scholars, unfurled the flag at the same time as the signal was given by the Duchess pressing the golden key, which was afterwards presented to her. A message of what had occurred was flashed to New Zealand, and also to the United Kingdom. Barton has received a cable congratulating him on the oponing of Parliament. Barton replied thanking Sedd ,n for his generous congratulations.
