OUR BRUNNERTON LETTER.

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

We have had the Bishop of Nelson amongst us, He held a confirmation service in St. Saviour’s Church, Wallsend. last Sunday evening, the church being crowded, when ten of our young people were confirmed. A preliminary start has heeu made to repair the Wallsend-Taylorville footbridge. The work is being carried out by day labor by the Public "Works’ Department. A quantity of material is to baud, and no doubt next week work will be proceeded with as vigorously as possible.

In answer to Ike question as to when Ike new post-office is to be erected, the Mayor informs me kc lias just received a wire tliat on (lie lion. Ward’s return from Australia, kc will be down tke Coast, and will inspect and select a site, and it will tken be proceeded witk at once.

At a sitting of (lie S.M. Court kero, keld on Friday, two drunks, wko were locked ii]i for a nigkt, were convicted and disekarged. A civil ease, Holey v. .Rosser—claim for Cl 14s Kid—judgment was given by default witk costs 25/-. Tkesc were tke only cases dealt witk, several being settled out of Court. Messrs Parkinson and Ward, J.P’s., were on tke bench.

At present we liave only three Justices of tke Peace kcre and another should be appointed. Since Brunner lias been in existence no man working in tke mine lias been appointed which appears a slight. Messrs Dunn and Coppersmith, both miners, were elected to the position of Mayor for two years each and have filled a number of other positions witk credit; yet they have been overlooked. This is a matter the Union should move in, and now is the time as another is required in the district.

Tke residents of tke district will regret to learn that Mr James Noonan, proprietor of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Dobson, broke a blood vessel during lastweek, and lies in a very critical condition.

Tke statistics for (he month of April for Brunner are births 3, deaths nil, marriages 3.

I notice we are to have a visit from the truant officer. It is not before it is required, as wc have a number of parents incur midst wko require more than a visit to compel (hem to do justice to their oilspring.

Our Volunteers intend to celebrate (heir first anniversary by a ball and supper in Kaye’s Hall on Thursday evening, 23rd. They have secured firstclass music and a good lloor. We have' no doubt 11 1 oy will have a large attendance and a good night’s amusement.

The Kailway Department have been repairing and renovating their stations up this way and the work was urgently required as the structures were looking in a very dilapidated condition. Some improvements arc urgently required at Dobson.

Several of our business people are now burning acetyliao gas, finding it cheaper and cleaner than kerosene, the latest conceit being Mr Russell of the Buck’s Head Hotel, who is now having it laid on and intends to use it.

So far nothing has been done towards expending the grant for gravelling the Blackball road. There being a number of idle men in the district in want of work, ibe weather is possibly the cause.
