THE RETURNING TROOPS.
[pee peess association.] Christchurch, May 10. The returned hoopers were entorthned at luncheon to-day, the Mayor presided. Tho Premier, in a speech, said ho had received a telegram announcing tho arrival of tho Seventh Contingent in South Africa, and hinted at the possibility of sending another contingent, as tho sooner the war ended tho better for tho Colony and Empire. Ho also stated that Lieut?. Lcwin and Sommervillc had been promoted to Captaincies. Colonel .Towsey, Major Crawshaw and Captains Sommervillc and Lewin responded to the toast of the contingents, which were received with the greatest enthusiasm.
After lunch the men marched through the principal streets which were densely thronged with cheering crowds. This evening they wore entertained at conversazione and the northern men lert for Lyttelton at 10 pan.
