The Returning Troops

Inyercaegiel, May 9. A large number of people who gathered to welcome the Southland troops to-day, were disappointed, as the men, for some unknown reason, did not come, although the volunteers were called out to meet them.

The Arbitration Court. Christchurch, May 10. Justice Cooper at the Arbitration Court to-day decided that the hairdresses assistants come within the scope of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. Jusdcc Edwards some time ago held that grocers assistants and tramway employers were outside of tho Act, as they were not connected with productive industry. Since then, however, the Act has been amended and Judge Cooper holds that the word industry extended so as to include business, trades, undertaking, and employments of a nonproductive character, but will probably be taken to the Supremo Court for final decision. Poultry for Government. Wellington, This Day. Five coops of pure bred fowls arc coming ’in the Rakaia consigned to Government. They are brown Leghorns, Plymouth Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, and Langshans. The poultry coming forward to tho Government arc not altogether suitable. Concerning New Zealanders. Wellington, This Day. The Premier has received advice to-day of tho dangerous illness of three New Zealanders in South Africa—C. Lindop, Sixth Contingent of enteric fever, at Pretoria ; E. J. Barrcr, Fifth Contingent of dysentery at Kimberly; William Stock, Fourth Contingent, of enteric fever at Johannesburg. New Zealand Swine.

It is notified in this week’s Gazette that tho following colonies have prohibited the importation of swine from New Zealand for the periods stated —Queensland six months from March 27th, N. S. Wales one year from March 21st, Victoria, until revoked, Tasmania, one year from April 12th, Western Australia, until revoked. Pre-Sessional Address.

John Hutcheson, senior member for Wellington City, delivered a post-scs sional address to.night. His remarks were chiefly devoted to a criticism of the Government. No vote was taken. Federation Commission. Wellington, May 10.

Fire Brigades

Tho annual report of the Superintendent of the municipal fire brigade states that during tho year 96 fires occured, with a total loss for the year of £22,403. Of this amount £15,000 was lost in three fires.

Women’s Convention Wanganui, May 10,

Tho annual Convention of the National Council of tho Women of New Zealand commenced to-day, when some fifteen delegates representing affiliated societies from all parts of tho Colony took their scats. Tho formal welcome took place at tho evening meeting when the delegates were welcomed by tho Mayor, Mr Hatrick, Mr Willis, M.H.R., Mrs M'Grcgor, Miss Fraser, Dr Hatherley, Rev Coaker and Dr Smith. After Mrs Scivewright and Mrs Atkinson J had returned thanks on behalf of the delegates, Mrs Sheppard, the President of the Council, delivered an address and Miss Henderson read tho secretarial report,

Mayoress of Napier.

Napier, May 10.

Tho late Mayoress, Mrs G. H. Swan, was this afternoon the recipient of a handsome silver tea and coffee service, butter dish and tray from a number of ladies, as a mark of tho appreciation of the manner in which she had carried out the duties of the position during the long mayoralty of her husband. Tho presentation was made by tho present Mayoress, Mrs John M’Yay, on behalf of tho subscribers. Mrs Swan suitably replied, expressing her surprise and pleasure at being made the recipient of such a handsome gift.
