RETURNED NEW ZEALANDERS.

The returned troopers met with an enthusiastic reception on their arrival here this evening. At the station addresses of welcome were given by the Mayor and the Premier. Mr Scddon stated that Government had declined to entertain the suggestion by the Imperial authorities that the Boer prisoners should be interned on Stewart Island, and that to-morrow Major Jowsey would be promoted to the 'rank of colonel. A short thanksgiving service, attended by the men, was held in the Cathedral, lomorrow there will be a luncheon and a conversazoine. Timabtt, May 9.

A special train with the Canterbury, West Coast and North Island returning troopers, arrived here this afternoon under the command of Major Jowsey, the Premier also being with the party. They had a most enthusiastic reception here, a crowd of about 8.000 witnessing the reception. After the luncheon to the men in the Drill Shed, a procession of the troops, volunteers and friendly societies marched through the streets to the railway station, near which spcecnes of welcome were made and were briefly acknowledged by Major Jowsey and Captain Crawshaw.
