GREY COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the above was held yesterday afternoon. Present— Alessrs APKcchnie (chair), Hargreaves, Flynn, Harris, M’Carthy, Larkin, Ryall and Alar shall.

A telegram was read from the Undersecretary, relative to the completion of Paroa-Tcrcmakau road, stating that £2OO had been voted. Mr Phillips stated that that money had been expended during January, twelve months ago, and an application had been made for more just

before last session. Resolved that application he made to the Government for a special grant of £2OO for the completion of the road. Resolved (hat the Treasurer be written to for particulars of lire goldfields revenue.

Resolved to proceed witli the erection of Greenstone Creek bridge.

From District Engineer relative to Air Evan’s gate and fence at Poerua, asking the Council to move them back five chains. Referred to the Engineer. From J. D. Ritchie, of Agricultural Department, in regard to the inspecting and licensing of slaughter houses ; also stating (hat the Act came into force on July Ist. Letter received.

From Mines Department offering a subsidy of £75 for the Mosquito road, , making a total of £253. Eeceiucd A

From Chief Health Officer in regard to tho sanitary condition of the County and asking that a crusade be made against rats. Letter received.

From J. O’Alalley asking the Council to repair the Grey River bridge, stating that he had a contract for carting sleepers for the railway department and he had to cross this bridge.

Air Harris moved that the applicant be informed that the Public AYorks Department are going to take the matter in hand and further that the expenditure of a small amount on the bridge would bo useless, Carried.

From Nelson Creek Gold Dredging Company per AA r . O’Kane asking permission to dredge through a track. Mr Hannan moved that the application be granted on condition that the traffic he kept as near as possible to the present road, also that after taking dredge through the track the Company put same in repair again. Carried. Prom Secretary of Harbor Board stating that the debris and muck dropped from the trucks on to the road at Cohden would he removed, also a lamp had been, placed in the vicinity. From J. Nelson asking that the drain in Palmerston street at Cobden be extended one chain. Request granted. From Borough Town Clerk, asking Council to unite in establishing abattoirs. Cr. Alarshall moved that the Borough Council be informed that the County Council cannot see its way to co-operate. Carried.

From A. I). Johnston, on behalf of Three Mile Greenstone Company, asking to be allowed to dredge across a ford.— Left in the hands of the Engineer, Cr. Harris and the Chairman to deal with. The Town Clerk wrote, stating that;the Council’s share in the Peace Celebration was £35 16s 6d. —Eesolved to pay amount.

Prom M. Evans, asking that a bridge be put over Dry Creek, and stating that money had been voted for the construction of same.—Eesolved that the Land Board be asked to carry out work. From W. Hayes, asking Council to erect a bridge over a creek at Cobden.” Ecferred to the Engineer. From P. Cressy, drawing the attention of the Council to the dangerous state of a drain on the Moonlight road. —Eesolved that the repairs be executed and the work finished. From Mr. Mackley, complaining that the contractors for the Waipuna Creek road had carted timber and earth on to his ground, and that so long as it remained there he could not finish erecting a fence. —Eesolved that Mr. Mackley be informed that the matter will be attended to.

From Maori Gully Gold Dredging Company, in reference to the bridge over the Maori Gully Creek, stating that they could not cart any heavy material over it until the bridge was strengthened.— Letter received. Letters of thanks were read for the use of the County Chambers from the Coal Mines’, Midland; Bivers’, and Staffs and Salaries’ Commissions,

The Council then adjourned till 7 30 p.m.

On resuming an application was received from the Maori Queen Company, asking permission to dredge across a track, stating that they would form a temporary one, and after having dredged across it would relay it to the satisfaction of the Council.

Cr. Ilyall said that the Council should do all iu its power to foster the dredging industry as it meant the welfare of the people. He moved that the matter be referred to the Engineer. Carried. From Southland County Council in reference to amendments to the Local Bodies Act, asking the Council to send on their amendments. Cr. Larkin moved and Cr Eyall seconded that a Committee consisting of the whole Council go through the matter at the next meeting of the Council. Carried.

From Dr Scott relative to the impassible state of the Bell Hill road and pointing out the necessity for repairs thereto ; also proposing that his Company would give £IOO, the Council £IOO, and the Government subsidy would make up the estimate (£400). The work would be done under their manager’s guidance, the County Engineer supervising. Cr M’Carthy moved that the offer be accepted and the work be done by contract under the sole supervision of the Council’s Engineer; also that when the track is repaired no wheeled traffic be allowed on same.
