Returning to New Zealand. Received this day, at 9 56 a.m. Sydney, May 6. Ladies Ranfurly, Constance and E. Knox, and Major Steward and Russell, members of the New Zealand Federal Commission, were passengers by the Warriwoo on Saturday. Soldiers’ Pay. The Government has decided to pay the First and Second Contingents sent to South 4/6 per day, but those who received 1/2 per day Imperial pay while, at the front will have that amount deducted. The matter has long been in dispute, the men claiming 4/6 over and above Imperial pay. Census Returns. The census shows that males increased 102,645 and females 127,353. The population represents 4'45 persons to the square mile compared with 3'65 last census. The Plague. Phillipine files state that the plague exists at Manila. The first case was in the middle of March, and since nine cases occurred. All were fatal.
