Britain being averse to establish a precedent, has rejected Germany’s claim of a lump sum of £SOOO as compensation fer iho Germans expelled from the Transvaal. The Commission appointed Lord Lansdowne last month to investigate tho claims of the deported foreigners and examining tho individual claim--'.
London May 2. Grenfell attacked tho Boers at Bergplaats near Hanertsberg, facing the enemy’s “ long tom, ” which opened fire Tit 10,000 yards. Kitchener’s fighting scouts advanced rapidly to within 3000 yards, wo on the Boers exploded the “ long tom ” and fled, and ten were captured.
The other British column killed 10 Boers, wounded six, captured six and 30,000 rounds of small arms ammunition, while GO Boers surrendered. The British lost four killed and seven wounded in the various skirmishes. 500 Boer prisoners have arrived at Madras. They will be sent to Bellary, a strongly fortified inland town and military station.
