The non-participatian of French troops in the recent fighting in the Shansi frontier is attributed in Berlin to the splendid marching of Germans enabling them to outstrip the French. The Pekin correspondent of the ‘ Times ’ complains that no notificatian of the expedition was made beforehand to the British.
The work of fortifying the legations at Pekin is finished. The fortifiaations are described as formidable and they command the Imperial Police. Received this day at 11 a m. The indemnity claimed by Germany from China includes £220,000 for the fortifying of Kiaochan, £165,000 for the laying of cables between Kiaochan, Shanghai and Cheefoo.
