HATUMA ESTATE.

[PBR PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Successful Ballot. Napieb, April 28,

The Hatuma estate of 25,737 acres acquired compulsorily under the Lands for settlement Act and subject to long legal proceedings between Mr Purves Russell and the Government was balloted for at Waipukurau yesterday in the presence of a large number of interested spectators. Altogether there were 225 persons present representing 930 applications for 57 sections. The ballot was held under the supervision of the Crown Lands’ Commissioner and Hawkes Bay Land Board. For some sections there were as many as 40 to 50 applicants. In addition to successful Hawkes Bay applicants sections went to settlers from Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington, Taranaki, Wanganui, Wairarapa, and elsewhere.

The ballot on the whole was eminently successful.
