FIGHTING IN NORTHERN NIGERIA
Liberation of a Thousand Slaves.

Received this day at 8 47 a m. London, April 25. Brigadier-General P. D. Luzard, Governor of Northern Nigeria, has despatched Colonel G. W. Kemball with 400 men of the West African frontier force against the Emirs Kontagora and Bida, two'of the strongest slave raiders in Northern Nigeria. A desperate fight took placo outside Kontagora with 5000 natives who repeatedly charged within 30 yards of the maxims. Ultimately the natives were routed with heavy loss. The large cities of Kontagora and Bida have been occupied, garrisoned and new rulers installed. The British losses were nominal. The result of the fight was that a thousand slaves were released.
