PROGRESS OF GOLD DREDGING.

(per press association.)

Dunedin, This Day. Much disappointment is being felt at the small returns of the West Coast dredges. Better things are expected from most of the claims there, particularly the Leviathan, which has so far done very little. The sudden failure of the Grey River, after the large return of

a few months hack, has also created a good deal of surprise. Nelson Crook appears to be the only dredge to maintain a name for anything like consistency, and it will probably be found before long that she can do much belter work than she has done up to the present. As for dredging in Otago, most of (he companies continue to make ends meet, and pay dividends now and again. .1 he Electric still leads the way, and is proving a very safe investment lor lire fortunate shareholders. The Cromwell Company’s dredge, which is situated near the Electric; has made a good start for the winter by scooping up over 1 ifiqz. The fate of the Cardrona field is still very undecided. Cardrona 2\o. 1 managed to obtain 7oz lOdwt for the first week, bul something better than this will have to be done Im?fore it can be said that Cardrona is likely to prove a success., Thousands ot pounds have been sunk in this field, and, should it turn out a failure, it must almost moan ruin to many people, both in Dunedin and the country.
