Commemoration Medals. Wellington, April 19. The contract for the supply of a hundred and twenty thousand bronze medals for distribution among school children in commemoration of the Eoyal visit has been given by the Government to G. J. White of Wellington!' Saddon goes to Australia. The Premier leaves for Melbourne on the 27th instant to take part in the opening ot the Federal Parliament. New Zealand Session.

Seddon states that the New Zealand Parliament will meet for the transaction of business on Friday, 23th June. Census Returns. Auckland, April 17. The census returns are completed for Piako county, the total being 3324. In 1896 the census showed a population of 2706. The official census return for St Hilda was available to-day, the total being 1700 against 1185 in 1896, an increase of 513. The census returns for Palmerston North give 6,563, an increase of 653; Mastorton 3922, increase 329; New Plymouth 4407, increase 582. Progressive City. The polling took place to-day on the three loan proposals submitted by the City Council to the ratepayers. The polling was as follows : —Tramway loan of £225,000, for 1237, against 268; woodpaving, loan of £55,000, for 789, against 677; town hall loan of £55,000, for 1150, against 344. All three were thus carried. Under 1500 ratepayers voted out of over 6600 on the roll.

General Exploration Company. Dunedin This Day. G S Munro of Dunedin has purchased the assets of the General Exploration Coy "Westport. These include Eochford and Bendigo fluicing claims and represents an expenditure of sixty thousand. It is expected to dismantle and abandon the Ben digo properly and push on with the developement of the Eochford claim and adjoining terraces.
