Greymouth Evening Star, AND BRUNNERTON ADVOCATE. FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 1901. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Owing to a rumor circulated that in the forthcoming election that all ballot papers would be invalid unless only nine names—neither, more nr less—were left uncancelled, there has been much discussion and uncertainty. There is, however, no cause for apprehension on the matter. The Election Act, which applies, states that the voter having received a voting paper shall retire into one of the inner compartments provided, and shall there alone, and secretly, strike out from the voting paper the names of the candidates for whom he does not intend to vote. There are nineteen candidates on the paper, and only nine lo be elected. It follows then that any paper having more than nine uncancelled will be invalid, but papers voting for a lesser number than nine will bo perfectly correct. As a matter of fact the voter can vote for any number from one to nine of the number on the list, and Mr. Hannan, the Borough solicitor, has given an opinion to this effect. The Westland Gold Dredging Company are inviting tenders for building pontoons. Plans and specifications may bo seen at the consulting engineers’ branch office, Tainui Street, To bo had at Griffon and Smith’s Union Store a choice ass rlmontof spring flowering bulbs, comprising the following well-known kinds:—Crocuses, Anemones, Tulips. Karcisies, Snowflakes, Jrescas, and other numerous varieties.— Adyt. Mr. Butts, the popular head of the locomotive department of flic Greymouth .Railways, will leave Groymouth about the end of next week. He proceeds to Wanganui. His promotion is well earned, but all the same the Greymouth people will be sorry to lose such an obliging officer and excellent citizen. A very nasty wash-out was occasioned by the flood on the Greyniouth-Christ-church railway near the Otira. The damage done is considerable, and a large gang of men are now at work making good the permanent way.
Tenders are invited for the cartage of machinery for the Duke of "Wellington and Garibaldi Gold Dredging Companies. For further particulars see our advertising columns. Those commodious premises in "Werita street, which have been in (he occupation of Messrs. Nancarrow and Co. for 25 years, have lately undergone extensive alterations. On the right-hand n’dc the I'.S.S. Co. have had their permanentrooms fitted up, while on the left side of the building are (he apartments occupied by Messrs. Ilcaphy and "Warncs (Nancarrow and Co.) Altogether the renovations have converted the large structure into very convenient offices, which arc well lighted and ventilated.
This morning Grcymonth folks had the first real taste of the “Ixirber” the “cool fog” coming down the gorge, keen and cutting from daylight (ill after nine o’clock. “In its embranee ” says the scientist, “All germs die ; long live the barber ! J ” Messrs M’Tvay and sons, are again before tlie public with (heir fine stock of new "Winter goods which for quality and price will be difficult to beat. The advent of cold weather (he firm have anticipated by laying in an immense stock of blankets all prices and sizes, but all of excellent quality. The visiting team of Grmymouth footballers returned to (own yesterday. They were not as successful as could be desired, but the trip was on flic whole an enjoyable one. On their return (boy were stuck up at the Otira by the floods for a day. The Greenstone Creek wash up on Saturday last was only three ounces. This is most disappointing, but by way of explanation wc arc told that the dredge had not bottomed and was not fairly on to the wash. It would have been much better if we bad been told this before instead of having to wait for 1 lie news from Christchurch.
The Druids met last evening, and after the usual routine business was disposed of two candidates were admitted with the usual ceremonies. Arrangements were made to hold their first social on Wednesday 21th inst, when a very pleasant evening is anticipated. Three gentlemen were proposed tor membership, and after passing some aceO-uls the meeting closed in the usual way. Mr Scott chairman of Directors in the Kumara Times says, I wish to state that any work done on the Sabbath at the Greenstone Junction Dredge was work of necessity, and a report to that effect has been far warded to the Inspector at Greymoutb. In sanctioning such work the Directors were actuated by a sense of duty in safeguarding the interests of shareholders. The comparison of our crew to Chinamen is peurilo. They are good specimens of Britishers and have no need or desire of their self-elected champion.
An old identity of the Coast in the person of Mr William Ellis died in the Westport Hospital on Saturday morning. ITo was well-known all over the Coast, whore he had for many years worked as a miner. Dr M’llroy, of E-oss, bad a recent call to visit a patient atOkaruo. On his return he was overtaken by night at the 1. iulo Wanganui river anA spent eight hours in the open in intense darkness. In the maps of Europe which were used in the Filipino schools under the Spanish regime, a large space in the centre of that continent, usually occupying more than one-half the page, was, it is said, marked Spain ; all the rest of the countries were scattered about the edge. Thus the young Filipino came to have a very distorted idea of the magnitude of the country of his oppressors. Even Aguinaldo was surprised to learn that America covers a greater arc'd than (Spain. A sensation was caused at Golden Point, Ballarat East, on Sunday afternoon (loth December), by a riot among Chinese, arising out of a meeting held at the joss-house, to initiate a movement in support of reform in China. Spears and iron bars were brought into requisition by a small section which favoured the Boxers, and three men received serious cuts and bruises. The police soon quelled the riot, aud made a few arrests.
It was officially announced by the management of the Mount Morgan Company (0.) that the greater portion of the town works, including nearly all the treatment parts, would cease work on Saturday, s:9th December. Tin* step was rendered necessary owing to the absolute failure of the water supply, and means the temporary retrenchment of 200 men in addition to those already dispensed with. An important slop is announced by the authorities of Queen’s College, Belfast. Hitherto only professional and other students have been allowed to attend for regular courses of study, but now it is proposed to afford to outside ladies and gentlemen, who wish to pursue some particular line of reading in the college, the assistance of professors. A start will be made by Professor MacMullao, who fills the chair of English literature, with a course of lectures on Shakespeare. An interesting and rather pathetic little case (says the Sydney Mail) was tried in the Sydney law courts last week, when a man with a wooden leg strove to recover damages for injuries to the member from the Post Office authorities, He had been posting a letter at the G.P.O. when his wooden stump caught in one of the glass prisms lighting the regions below in the Post Office coionade, and his thigh was so badly wrenched that his leg had to bo amputated higher up, and lie suite; ed other injures. It was sought to show that ho only suffered because ho had this wooden slump, and no normally limbed person would have been hurt; but Judge Backhouse very properly uphold the doctrine that special protection must ho shown to the “ old, the lame, and the infirm ’’ in streets and public places, and awarded £l5O damages.
At Bendigo (Vic.) on Christmas Day two youths who had entered an hotel for drink lodged a loaded gun against the wall. It is assumed that some children interfered with the gun, and the charge exploded, wounding three or them. One of them, a boy aged four years, will probably lose the use of his right arm. Four hundred indigent men and a number of poor women were regaled with. a dinner on Christmas Day at the Ci'y Night Ilcfugc and Soup Kitchen in Ivontstrect Sydney. It entailed the consumption of Gcwt of beef, 3 sheep, <L9 Brobdingnagian plum puddings and the customary trimmings, together with several dozen cases of fruit. At the fire brigade sports at Bendigo (Yic) on Christmas day a young man, while competing in the tub race in a pond in the garden, fell into the water. Several persons at once plunged in to his assistance, and two of them narrowly escaped being drowned. Ho eventually was brought out of the water, hut aU attempts at restoration failed,
A case arising out of the removal of street blinds by the municipal authorities was decided in Sydney a few days ago. A picture frame maker sued tbc City Council for Jg2oo damages for the removal of his blind. For the defence it was held that the blind was only 7ft from the pavement, and was therefore an obstruction, A verdict was given for the Council. A telegram received from Oodnadatta, in tiie far north of South Australia, reported that a nrospecthig party in charge of George Albert had returned to Tod morden Station, after an encounter with natives in the Mann flanges, during which an Afghan camel-driver and a man named Cockrum, were speared by the Blacks. The Afglwin died from his wounds next day, but Gockrum was recovering. WADE’S WORM FIGS arc most effective and not unpleasant; children thrive after taking them.
