A CONFIDENCE DODGE.

[Per Press Association—Copxright ]

Wellington, April 15. A story of. a bold fraud was told at the Magistrate's Court to-day in a case brought against Chas. Lister, charged with having obtained a cheque for £25 from Frederick Fabian by false pretences. Accused who represented himself to bo sole agent for a firm of New York agents advertised for a book-keeper. Fabian replied to the advertisement, and was told the firm would require £SO security before engaging him. Fabian agreed to pay £25 down and gave a cheque for that amount, undertaking to pay the balance in a week or two. An agreement was then drawn up between the two. Accused then attempted to purchase a bicycle with the cheque but failed and was soon afterwards interviowed by a detective. Ho subsequently admitted he was not connected with the firm he had represented himself as agent for and that his dealings with Fabian were fraudulent. In Court accused pleaded guilty to receiving money by falsa pretences but with no intention to defraud. Ho explained this qualified admission by stating that he adopted his

methods in expectation of receiving money from his father at home, intending to drop the name of the firm when he received fund 3 and continue in some business himself. He was committed to the Supreme Court for ssntence.
