Westport Coal
Westpokt, April 15.
At a meeting of the Westport Harbor Board to-day exception was taken to an article in the New Zealand Times by Mr Boardman, which a member said conveyed the impression that the board wero responsible for the breakage of household coal by the retention of the present system of loading at the staiths. The chairman said the board had provided cranes for loading household coal and it was not the fault of tie board if the Westport Coal Co used the staiths instead of these.
Mayor of Roslyn, Dunedin, This Day. Thomas Me Konzie, M.H.R. was elected Mayor of Boslyn unopposed. Royal Invitation Cards. Wellington, April 14th. Dc Pell, and Messrs Riley and Wardell have been appointed the Board to judge the designs for the invitation cards to the official ceremonies in connection with the Royal visit. New Stamps. The engravers and tho die sinkers in Wellington are busily engaged in the preparation of official stamps, and seals to replace those used during the previous reign. Concerning Football. Wellington, April 16. A meeting of the management committoo of the New Zealand Rugby Union was held to-night, at which correspondence was read from tho New South Wales Union which proposed to sond a team to New Zealand this year, and that this colony return the visit in 1903, A Queensland team is coming to Now Zealand next year. It was decided to send a copy of the correspondence to each affiliated uaion. so that all might advise their delegatss to the annual meeting next week. Burnt to Death. Napier, This Day.
The police receivod information that Mrs Eliza Noon was burnt to death this morning, through her house being destroyed by flro. The deceased was 90 years of age. Municipal Matters. Napi i;r, This Day. McVay and Carnefi have been nominated for the Mayoralty. There aro 25 candidates for 12 seats as councillors. An old Woman burned to death. Tauranga, This Day. Particulars of the fire, which caused the death of Mrs. Moon, show that decoased lived at Gate Pa, three miles from here. When the fire was discovered, the cottage was ablaze and it was impossible for anyone to enter. Her son Frederick, who usually lived with his mother, was away from home and there was no one in the house with her. After the destruction of the house her remains were discovered half way between where the bed stood and the front d®or. Deceased was 95 years of age and resident here for yoars.
False Pretences. A man named George Frederick Porter, arrested at Te Puke for false pretences, recently arrived from Auckland. He represented himself as a man of fortune, bought a farm and spent money lavishly. Other charges of a similar nature are pending. Supreme Court. Wellington, This Day. The Chief Justice this morning sentenced John Haughon for the forging of names of clergymen and others' to 18 months' hard labor. Lister, who pleaded guilty yesterday to false pretences, was sentsnced to twelve months labor. Ngahina Matu was committed for trial to-day on a charge of breaking and entering another Maori's hut at Otaki. Found Dead. Auckland, This Day. A German aged 55, named G. 0. Zanders, was found dead. His wife, on returning from the country, discovered the body. He had been dead about a week.
