NEW ZEALAND FEDERAL COMMISSION.

[BY ELECTRIC TKLEGBAPH, —COPYRIGHT.]

(per press association)

Adelaide, April 12. Millar, a member of the New Zealand Federal Commission, left for Melbourne yesterday afternoon, where he will inspect several factories. Ho will then go on to Newcastle, re-joining the Commission at Sydney.

The Commission takes further evidence to-day and leaves in the afternoon for Melbourne, where Sir John Forrest will be examined on Saturday. Reid and Jack Want will give evidence at Sydney on Tuesday, and the Commission leave for Brisbane on the following day. The Begister commenting on the arrival of the Commission and evidence it has taken in New Zealand and other colonies says: while it recognises the full force of the sentimental argument of union and entertaining admiration, esteem, marked individuality and mobility of New Zealanders, we are bound to say that in our judgment the case for the enlargement of the Commonwealth has not up to the present been proved. The onus of showing the necessity for widening the area of jurisdiction does not rest with Australia. If New Zealanders ask to be admitted to the Commonwealth on terms mutually to be agreed upon. We may be sure the application will receive tho earnest and sympathetic consideration. In tho meantime, the policy of the Federal Government will be to promote feelings of goodwill and anuity, which should exist between two great co-operating countries.
