PEDESTRIAN CONTEST.

A good deal of interest was taken in the half-mile race in Victoria Park yesterday between Sherlock of Westport and Daly of Blackball. The heavy rain rendered the course anything but pleasant; indeed it was scarcely fit fcflrunning. The attendance was about 500, and at least double that number would have been there had the weather been anything like line, for there was great interest taken in the event. The Greymouth and Blackball folks fancied their man and backed him freely, while the Westport visitors were quite as keen upon their champion. Punctually to time Mr Perkins sent the pair off to a good start, and away they went at a sprinting pace for the first 200 yards, Daly who had the outside running forcing the pace in hope of getting the inside but bherlock prevented this. The pair kept together for the first 500 yards when Daly momentary got a slight lead. A hundred yards from homo, Sherlock came away and establishing a won by about 10 yards in 2 minutes 10 seconds, which considering the state of the track was real good time. Both men had quite enough of it at the finish. Clear, fair and honest contests such as the above wifi do much to revive such contests on the West Coast, and already we hear of several challenges likely to ensue. There is moreover some talk of another event between Sherlock and Daly, the backers of the latter asking for 15 yards start. Such a contest would cause a hatful of money.
