In St. John's Presbyterian Church tomorrow evening the service will be devoted to the interests of the young people, The subject of the Rev. ft. Stewart's lecture will be " How to make the best of life." All are welcome, but young people arc specially invited. For neglecting to supply the necessary information a penalty of £2O may be inflicted.
General regret (says tho Times) will bo felc at the news of the accident tint has befallen Corporal Fowler, who so recently left Hokitika full of youthful spirits to join the Seventh Contingent. It appears from the telegrams that during riding excerciso his horse bolted and he jumped off, sustaining concussion of the brain and fracture of several ribs.
On the ove of his depavturo for tho West Coast, Mr G. Cunningham, late dredgetnaster of the Cnatto Creek dredge, was entertained by a number of his friends at the Bendigo Hotel, Alexandra. Mr Cunningham's health was toasted, and he was presented with a case of pipes and a silver match box, as a small token of the esteem in which he is hold by a large circle of friends in Alexandra. Mr Cunningham takes charge of the Erickson's Reward dredge. Mr F. W. Last night by invitation at the Wcsleyan Church, a very pleasant social evening was spent by tho Cobden Christian Endeavor Society. In the course of the evening a member of the Wesley an Church stepped forward and in addressing the Rev, Mr. Oxbrow, who has given up his charge here, presented him with a pair of handsome, initiated gold sleeve links as a token of esteem. Subsequently the Rev. Mr. Gray, on behalf of tho members of the Church, presented the Reverend gentleman with a beautiful silver locket filled with sovereigns as an acknowledgment of the manner in which he had filled the pulpit lor the past three or four months. Mr Oxbrow was also made a presentation by his Cobden friends the previous night. Mr Oxbrow, in responding, said such appreciation was most gratifying, and in tho new circuit he was about to undertake would give encouragement. A most enjoyable time was brought to a close by singing " God Save the Ring." Captain Millman, late of the Janet Nicoll, has succeeded Captain ITutton in the Omapore. The Greymoutli Town Band sent an entry for the Band Contest, but it was received too laic. It is rumoured that Mr. James M'Kerrow will likely bo appointed to the vacant Surveyor-Generalship.
The now wing of Scarfs Hotel, Wellington, will be reserved exclusively for the use of the Cornwalls and Royal suite. Trooper Hutchison, who went to (ho front as reporter with the Fourth Contingent, has joined the Royal Artillery. A tourist who missed the evening train on Monday week from Palrnerston to Wanganui, en routo to the river trip, whose wife and children were aboard tho ordinary train, chartered a special train, costing him over £io. An aged couple in tho Manawatu district in applying for old age pensions mentioned that they were born within a month of each other in the same town of Prussia, and that thoy went to tho same school as children. After marrying tho couple came out to this colony, and both were granted pensions in Palmerston North on tho same day.
TheWestland Dredging and Sluicing Coy., Ltd., of London have appointed Mr Phillip J. Perry oj Hokitika, as their attorney of New Zealand. A hotter selection could not have been made, as there are few meu who take a keener or more interlcctual interest in tho development of the mining industry. Mr Park has been appointed solicitor to the same company.
There is a large field for reform in the grievances of bank employees, most of whom are sorry they are not bricklayers or carpenters, whoso work ends at the threshold of their "job," and whose pay is so much more satisfactory than the men whose supposedly better social standing is to be kept up on the pittance now given to them.—Auckland Observer.
The Dunedin '• Star " Wellington special wires that there has been no decision yet as to calling Parliament together. Seeing that to meet in Wellington in May and then to adjourn to the Ist of Juiy would moan serions expense and inconvenience t.) members, it is proposed to consult them on the matter. By meeting on Juno 29th and formally opening by Commission, Parliament could meet again on Monday, July Ist, This would onablo salaries and pressing accounts to be voted, and an Imprest Supply Bill to bo passed. Tho debate on the Addross-in-Reply would bo adjourned. It is stated that there is precedent for such a course. However, members aro to bo consulted.
An instance of the rapidity with which news can be Hashed across the telegraph and cable wires came under the notice of the Gore " Standard " on Wednesday. Mr M'Nab, M.H.H., had an occasion on Monday last to telegraph to the Premier at Wellington asking him to use his good oilices with Lord Kitchener in South Africa to allow a Southland trooper in the Fourth Contingent to return to the colony owing to a death in the family of whom he was a member. In forty-nine and a half hours after Mr M'Nab had despatched his telegram from Mataura a reply was received from the Premier that Lord Kitchener had approved of the request, and that the trooper referred to had been relieved of duly and was returning by the first boat. "AVe often regret the fact that there are comparitively so few men attending our churches," said the Rev. Hugh Kelly when commenting on the reports submitted at the Presbyterian City Mission annual meeting at Auckland. "But I notice that there are 150 men in gaol, and only 1(3 women, so the men have a big majority at the services there if not elsewhere."
From a recent issue of the Christchurch Press, it is evident that a section of tho Conservative party aro anxious to doprive Captain Captain Russell from the leadership, and take on some new love. This action appears to us to smack largely of ingratitude, and if our contemporary really voices tho feelings and opinions of the Canterbury Conservatives, then Captain Russell has reason to be dissatisfied with them.—Taieri Advocate.
