GREYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the above Council was held in the Counoil Chambers last night. Present: Messrs Mathieson (chairman), Petrie, Ashton. Joyce, M'Lean, Bignell, Giesekiog, Steer, Sheedy, and O'Kane. The roll for the elections were presented and duly passed, and the Mayor and Crs. Sheedy and Steer signed same. From J. D. Ritchie of the Agricultural Department, intimating that licenses are to ba dated from June Ist to enable slaughtering companies to comply with regulations. From Dr Mason Health Officer, asking tho Council to take all precautions in the cause of health, and to make a special crusade against rats. The town clerk stated that poison had been again placed under the wharf.
From Messrs Moss and Co., putting tinder offer a site near the old Town Hall ,/ now occupied by Mr Wilson, for £l5O. Mr Lord said the land was not large mr enough. On motion of Mr Shoedy the r letter was referred to the Town Hall Committee to report at next meeting. From Mr C. Kettle, relative to condition of Hinchley Lane. Mr Lord said the matter had a'ready heen attended to. From Mr C, Kettle, relative to lamp at Elmer Lane. From the Eailway Department stating that they could not put a lamp at a flag-station. Mr Petrie moved that the Department be again approached and asked to put one of their spare lamps and Council will supply gas free. Seconded by Mr Steer and supported by Mr Sheedy and carried. From Napier Bell asking for p!ans for Water supply. Ordered to be sent on, From Harbor Board declining responsibility for damage to Mr Ashton's cart 0. while crossing Oobden bridge. Mr Bignell understood that the Harbor Board was at work. He moved that the amount be paid. It was not right that a private individual should suffer. The Mayor thought such resolution would form a dangerous precedent. Mr Petrie seconded the resolution. The accident occjj'red before any agreement had baen oajaie to. Supported by Mr Steer and SJaeedy and carried.
I Mr Steer moved that an agreement be made between the two bodies to prevent like occurances. Carried.
From Messrs Keating and Duffy asking for consideration owing to unforseen difficulties in cutting the tunnel at Johnston street. Referred to Works Committee for report. From Mr Greany asking for two chains of footpath to residence. Mr Petrie said, the work was a very trifling one, and he moved that it be done. Seconded by Mr Bignell. Mr Sheedy suggested that it bo first referred to the Works Committee which was agreed to. From the Peace Celebration Committee asking for balance due cost £l3. The Harbor Board and County Council paying the other two-thirds. Passed. From Mr Jones asking the Borough to remove the cemetery gates, as the Act required that no gates should be nearer than five chains. Letter received, Mr Lord stated that permission had been obtained before erection. The question of increasing the payment of sanitary contractors was referred to the Finance Committee for report. The following tenders were received t Section 49 (near Hospital). F. W. Andrews £3 15 0 J.B. Merritt 5 2 0 W. Eyan 3 0 0 Mr Merritt's tender was accepted
