PORIRUA NATIVE LAND TRUST.

(PKU PRESS ASSOCIATION )

"Wellington, March 98,

The case of the Solicitor-General v. Wallis and others, is now being argued. This is a case in which a decree was some time ago made by the Chief Justice and Justice Edwards for the administration cy-pres of trust of lands near Forirua ceded by the natives and granted by the Crown many years ago for purposes of a Native school'. Owing originally to want of funds and subsequently to decrease in the Native .population in the neighbourhood no school was over established. A fund of about £7OOO has now accumulated from rents and the Trustees applied to the Supreme Court for approval of a scheme of administration of the land and fund elsewhere, which was resisted by the Solicitor General on behalf of the Crown. The Chief Justice and Justice Edwards approved of rhe variation of same and made a decree for administration cy-prcs. The Solicitor-General appeals against this decision on the ground that no case was made out for administration cy-pres by the Court and that the matter should he left to the Crown. The ease is being argued before Judges Williams. Conolly, IJcnnislon and Cooper.
