STRATFORD-KARAKAWA RAILWAY.

Stratford, March 28,

Perfect weather prevailed for the celebration of turning the first sod of the Stratford- Karakawa railway. About 4000 were present, including a largo number of visitors by special train from Xew Plymouth and Hawera. The whole town was gaily decorated with (lags and arches of evergreens and to-night is brightly illuminated with numerous coloured electric lights and lanterns.

Hon Hall-Jones was driven to the site in an open landau drawn by four greys escorted by a detachment of mounted rifles, a procession following. Tn addressing the people on the ground Sir 1 lull-Jones said he expected to have the first train through to Toko by Xnias. Ho is being entertained at a banquet tonight.
