OUR KUMARA LETTER.
[OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Dr Scott was summoned yesterday afternoon to attend an old man named Richard Lawlor a resident on the Zapitea Creek. He was found to bo suffering from a stroke of paralysis and was immediately conveyed to the-Kumara Hospital.
The many friends of Mr H Burger (sen) will be glad to learn; that he has so far recovered from the effects of the severe surgical operation he recently underwent as to be able to return home. A short time should see him fully restored to health. To use an expression, thing 3 are "dead slow" here just now, the lull in the dredging boom has reached us, but we are still [loping that something will turn up trumps ret. Nothing can bo expected from the cwo local dredges this week as the .process of opening up is not yet complete. In the Junction claims the bands of sheet iron lavo not been removed from the screen, 10 all the stuff is being put through the •levator and none over the tables. This -ill continue for at least this week as the tcdgemaster Mr Bennet intends to leave i thing to chance. Some little delays bye occurred on both dredges on account obliterations etc, but these are inevitable or!all new machines. Iy Donaldson dredgemaster of the Gxmstone Three Mile informed me y'.<.erday evening that ho expects to get tt rork in a month from date, He does n(j intend to start a day before he is rejy. T.i machinery for the Greenstone Gold Cojis arriving. The boiler was taken oveSrin Tuesday. Ti tower of the Tercmakau pontoons is n/» in position, and it looks an imposing structure being 4(5 feet above deck. Thct pontoons are the largest on the Coas. As they and the Junction Dredge arc <\y a few minutes walk from town, they ould prove an additional attraction to vii >rs to our races on Easter Monday and '-osday. By coming in the early train would bo ample time to payai it and return to the races after. To th who have not seen them, they should i worth a visit for the novelty of the thin. The radical manner in which the of Kumara have come forwardjyith momentary assistance to insure £ local Jockey Ciub against loss, is credible in the extreme. With this and tbSsupport all lovers of fair play there little to fear.
