GREY EDUCATION BOARD.
A meeting of the Board was'field last night. Present—Messrs Harris (chair), Hot tie (treasurer), Hon J. Kerr. 'White, Marshall, Finn, M'Carchy and Petrie, The Chairman explained that the mesi ing Was to Consider the teachers’ salaries'.
Mr Kettle said that the present was a time in which the Board wanted the assistance of the Inspector. The Stillwater and Paroa Schools wore overstaffed, and expenditure must be curtailed. He didn’t know how they were going to deal with the subject before the Board, They should have thrown it out last meeting. Mr Kerr said that they had done the best they could. Other and larger Boards had unsuccessfully kicked. Mr White said the fault of Stillwater aud Parba being overstaffed was the Board’s fault. Mr Marshall said ; that if the Minister had given the Board the amount it could have made a much bettor division.
Mr Petrie had failed to realise the principal upon which the Department had acted, but presumed that the rough and ready way was to admit the department had given a number of increases, and he now proposed that the Board deal in a like manner with those who had not been increased. Mr Flynn and Marshall favored- this idea.
The shedale was accordingly taken, and those teachers passed over by thDepartmant dealt with, all getting a little increase, the total amount of which was £lO6,
On the question of tho High School allowance coming up no two member made the allowance the same, while the head teacher and the inspectors’ estimates were widely different. A long discussion ensued ; the actual additional amount for the school being, according to various calculations, set down as low as £lB 10s and as high as £L73. It was ultimately resolved to hold over consideration till May until the first allowance was to hand ; all expressing a determination to see that Mr Smith got a substantial increase.
