AUCKLAND DRILL SHED BURNED.
Heavy loss in Arms and Accoutre ments.
(per press association.)
Auckland, March 25.
The Volunteer Drill Shed was totally destroyed by fire. The origin is unknown. The caretaker and family had a narrow escape.
The whole interior of the shed was burnt out.
Most of the companies orderly rooms were gutted. Several companies, notably the Auckland Naval Volunteers, lost heavily in arras, accoutrements, uniforms and furniture.
Several A Batteries of 9 pounders wore damaged by the fire. A quantity of ammunition stored in the company’s rooms exploded. Many of the volunteers lost personal property. All Government property and the companies equipments were destroyed.
The loss of the drill shed itself is.not regretted, as it was very old, having been the first in use at the time of the Maori Wars in the sixties. There were no insurances on the building or contents.
