SOUTH WESTLAND MINING.

Messrs F. Maelcod and F. Boys have just returned after accompanying Mr Phillips on In's inspection tour of the mining privileges secured by them for the Syndicate they represent.

They report as follows : —Mr Phillips who has had some years experience as dredgemaster and is now representing Messrs Cut-ten Bros, visited the Saltwater Lagoon, and is highly pleased with the prospects obtained in the different parts of the lake. He estimated the return when work commences will he at least 40oz per week. A thorough trial was given testing wash at various places by means of box sluicing. It is well known that tho locality of the Saltwater lias yielded enormously in the past, but the ground upon which the dredge will start has been overlooked in the past, probably owing to tho fact that it is 4ft to sft under water. Mr Maelcod, on behalf of his syndicate (which has its headquarters at Wanganui) is proceeding to Okarito at once to arrange preliminaries.

Mr Phillips during his tour has also inspected the same syndicate’s prospecting areas at Duffer's Creek and reports favorably. He says the wash there is similar to that at the Bailor river, splendid prospects being got on the beaches in the granite sand.
