Drowned. Gisborne. March 23. A little native bey aged one and a half years was drowned at Pakarikiri. United States and Honolulu.
The Premier has received a letter from the United States Government indicating that there is no chance of the American Government adopting an open door policy in respect to Australian and New Zealand steamers calling at Honolulu. The Minister of Agriculture has appointed Singleton, a Canadian cheese-making export, as an officer to the agricultural department and expects him soon.

Solf Gorman, the Governor of Samoa, lias given the Premier an assurance that lie will do his utmost to promote trade between Samoa and New Zealand. Another Railway Started. Hall-Jones will perform the first sod ceremony at Stratford on Thursday. From a Reformatory to a Palacial Residence. Christchurch, This Day. At the Magistrate’s Court an application was made for cancellation of an order against Laetitia Berkcly to support her daughter, Rose, now in the Nelson Industrial School, and for cancellation of order of committal to school. It was stated that the girl was connected through her father (now dead) with one of the oldest families of the nobility in Britain. The relatives having adopted her she will he taken to England by the Eimutaka. The Magistrate promised to cancel the orders when informed by the Education Board that the child was in chargc-of a person taking her to England'.
