THE KAITANGATA COAL MINE.
Evidence before the Coal Commis-
sion. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, March 20, The Coal Mines Commission has been engaged for several days taking evidence at Kaitangata as to the state of the mine. The Secretary of the Miners Association put forword evidence to show that a large quantity of coal was lost through tire and that the means of escape were inadequate in case of fire, and as to prevailence of fire-damp. After hearing evidence and repeatedly inspecting the mine with Messrs Proud, Lomas, and E. 11. Green, Mines Inspector, the last witness said he could not think gas existed to the extent stated. There were risks of explosion if precautions were not taken, but no exceptional risk ; he did not apprehend any danger from fire behind the brick wall if it was attended to nor from any other fire in the mine. The management have done their duty to the mine and he would add that all the officials do exceedingly good work.
