EX PRESIDENT HARRISON.

The Hon. Benjamin Harrison whose death was recorded the other day was 23rd President of the United Siates, in early life adopted the legal profession, and practised at Indianopolis. On the outbreak of the Civil War, he assisted in raising the 70th Indian Eegiment, of which he was made colonel. He went through the Chattanoogal campaign with General Hooker's army, and at the close of the war he was appointod Brigadier General for ability and gallantry in the field. After the war he resumed the practice of hi 3 profession, and in 1876 accepted nomination for the Governorship of his

State but was defeated. In 1881 he wa returned to the United States Senate as representative of his State, and in 1888 lie was nominated for the Presidency by the Republican Convention, and defeated the Democratic candidate, Mr Cleveland, at the subsequent election. Owing to the unpopularity of Major M'kmleys Tariff Bill the Republican Party was defeated at the Presidential election in 1893, and the [President retired into private life. Last year he was appointed by President M'Kinlev a member of the International Court of Arbitration established by The Hague Peace Conference.
