THE ISLAND FRUIT TRADE.

[per press association.]

Wellington, This Day. Mr Napier, M.H.R., has written to Lord Ranfurly traversing the recent speech by Gudgeon, the British Resident of Raratonga on the Island fruit trade. The writer states that while advice to Natives as to handling fruit is sound some portions of the speech are brusque and offensive, and directly accuses the Natives of dishonesty. Napier strongly protests against the concentration of the Island trade at Wellington, and submits there is sufficient in the speech to justify the recall of Col. Gudgeon.
