The Mayor's Whisky.
Mr Pownall, Mayor of Masterton, has a pretty wit. Ho was engaged in a case not long ago in which Constable Smith, of Pahiatua was giving evidence. Smith the constable: "Liquor recently spilt has a peculiar appearance —you know that." Mr Pownall saw his opportunity, and seized it by the neck. "I don't know," he said. "I'm not in the habit of spiLing my liquor." A few apopletic subjects were carefully led out into the street, and gradually recovered.
