Cruelty to a Horse,

At the Police Court to-day, a man named George Donovan, a jockey, was fined 40s and costs or 21 days for ill treating the horse Venus, in a steeple chase at Potter’s paddock. Evidence showed that the horse had been cruelly spurred. Trade with South Africa. Wellington, March 7.

A shipment of frozen poultry has been sent to South Africa in the steamer Otararaa by tho Agricultural Department. There is reported to be an excellent market there.

Mangaweka, This Day.

A young man named Percy Smith, whose parents reside at Marton, was drowned yesterday afternoon in the Eaugitekei river, near Makobino viaduct while engaged in taking out sleepers that had been floated down from Moawbange. The body was recovered half an hour afterwards.

Miners’ Strike. Auckland, March 7,

The minors at the Karangahako railway tunnel are yet out on strike ; they say that the Government terms would not give them a living wage. They would be willing to have a fair price fixed by any three competent mine managers, of work at 8s per day for one month, and then fix co-opcrativc price.

Charles Smith, the husband of Mrs Smith, arrested in connection with the Conway case, is at Christchurch on his way to Sydney. Ho denied that he cabled the statement that ho owed Conway £2OO and that Conway hold a promissory note and deeds of his property.

An Old Yeteran. Hawer.v, This Day. James Linn, aged 72, an old settler and a Crimea War veteran who also took part in the Maori War, died suddenly.
