THE FEDERATION REFERANDUM.
In support of our contention in yesterday's issue this morning's Sydney Herald says :—Now Zealand proposal to take a federal referendum in conjunction with the census is to spring the question suddenly on the public undercover of the census paper and not the best way to secure a vote thoroughly representative of the public intelligence and understanding. In Australia the question had to be thoroughly threshed out before the people came to a decision. A strong additional reason why an immediate categorial answer should not be depended on is that in New Zea'and, the Federation Commission has not yet visited Australia or even considered its report.
