Opening of Parlianent. Wellington, March 5. As the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York will bo in the Colony from 11th io 29tli of Juno and it is not considered advisable for legislators to assemble during that period, it is quite possible that Parliament will he opened at the end of May for the transaction of some necessary business and that both Houses will then adjourn until the first week in July.

Wellington, March 5. - Government has decided to take a Referendum on the question of Federation with Australia simultaneously with the Census.

At tho Supreme Court to-day Charles Heatley was sentenced to six months hard labour. John Robert Corkhill, forging and uttering three cheques got six months. Wm. Andrews, stealing a dog got three months. Charles Arnett pleaded guilty to forty four informations, including theft, forgery and uttering, tho total amount involved being £478 odd. Arnett, as agent received money to pay rabbiters which he appropriated, committing forgeries to cover the delinquencies. ‘J he more serious charge of attempting to poison Miln, who was the chief sufiercr by his thefts was postponed till next sitting of tho Court, Arnett was sentenced to three years hard labour. Work has been stopped at the Karahengeka railway tunnel. About 50 men have ceased work. The average wages last month only reached 4s 5d and 5s 3d daily at the respective ends. OM Age Pensions.

Most members of Parliament that have yet answered the Premier’s circular, re contingent for the opening of Federal Parliament, favor the sending of less than a 1000 men, the suggestions generally ranging from ICO to 300. The Yorks’ Visit.
The programme of the Duke and Duchess of York provides that they arrive in Auckland on the 11th of June, visit Rotorua from 13th to 15th, arrive at Wellington on 17th, stay till 21st; spend 22nd to 24 1 h at Christchurch ; arrive at Dunedin on 25th, and sail thence to Australia on the 27th. Federation Referendum.
For the purpose of the Federation Referendum a voting paper for each adult inmate will be delivered at every house with the census papers submitting the question “Are you m favour of Federation with Australia” with the words yes or no, Teachers Salaries.
Tho Cabinet has decided after the separate sums available for each education board for increase of Teachers salaries has boon set aside that boards be asked to submit to Minister of Education proposals for further payments to teachers, the sum allocated for increases not to bo exceeded.
