S. F. Gore (Sutherland) won the first prize of £4,500 in Tattersall's sweep (Newmarket Handicap), F. Oslin (Christchurch) the second of £1,800; P. Hoggarth \Kumara) third of £9OO.

The Chamber of Commerce discussed Barton's attitude regarding colored labor, and adopted a resolution in favor of asking the Federal Premier to appoint a Koyal Commission to enquire into the sugar and other tropical industries before any legislation is introduced dealing with colored labor.

May 24th and June 3rd. Sydney, March 4. It is proposed to abandon May 24th as a public holiday and substitute June 3rd in honor of the Duke of York.

The Conway Case. The police are in communication with the New Zealand authorities in reference to the Conway case. It is rumored that arrests are imminent, but the police still refuse to disclose anything. Sewer Fatality. A man named John Stevens, working in a sewer, was overcome by foul air. A fellow-workman (Challis) who went to his assistance also was overcome. Nothing daunted, two workmen and a constable went down and succeeded in resuscitating Stevens, who died ; but the others recovered.
