SLY GROG SELLING.

(per press association.)

Dunedin, Feb. 18,

At the Tapanui, within the Clutha prohibition district, Mr Stratford, S.M. was engaged hearing further cases of alleged sly grog selling. James O’Dowd was first charged with selling liquor'on Monday. The principal witness was a man named Fearnley, employed by the police at police pay, but combining with it travelling for Wrigglesworth and Binns, seeking orders for photographs. He deposed to ordering four drinks for the Revs. Tosswill and Dallas (in Government employ) O’Dowd and himself. The Rev. Tosswill denied having been served on the night in question, and Dallas’s evidence was somewhat hazy. Ho could not say what drink ho had or what the others had, nor whether money was paid. He saw something like a coin on the table. After the defendant had explicitly denied the evidence of Fearnley the ease was dismissed. A second charge was laid and will be heard to-morrow. There are in all six informations. Evidently Fearnley was responsible for the raids in other parts of Clutha.

Ddnedin, February 19.

At Tapanui to-day the information against McCann was dismissed and the hearing of the fresh information laid yesterday was adjourned. It was stated that McCann would only allow one stranger to enter the bar at a time and always locked the door behind him, Teamley and Williams, in polics employ, gave evidence as to being supplied with drink, Williams (who was at one time in the Deeds Office, Napier) could fix no definite date and for the defence evidence was given that on the day stated by Fearnley, McCann had gone away fishing from an early hour to late at night.
