The Rev. John Gow, Pro byterian Minister, aged 80. died at Opoiiki yesterday.

Tha Imperial Troops,

It is stated that never in the history of Auckland has such an immense crowd assembled in one spot as that which gathered at the Domain cricket ground on Saturday to see tho Imperial troops. It is estimated that there must have been 40,000 spectators present in the great green amphitheatre. It was a marvellous sight. This Day. Large crowds arc greeting the Imperial Troops on the return from Rotorua. Tne troops lined tip and gave three cheers for Seddon and Ward. On the run down„near Oxford a man jumped off the train going at B<> miles an hour and has not been recovered, another jumped off at Manakau and was recovered, and a third jumped 011 ac Mercer and was recovered though badly bruised. Tne Premier proceeds to Gisbornc in the Dalhousie with the Indian Contingent. The troops leave for Adelaide at noon to-day. Imperial Soldiers at Rotorua. The soldiers sleeping in halls at Rotorua had a pretty good time. By six o'clock the baths were filled with a laughing crowd of Tommies who where intensely enjoying the warm dip. They are absolutely delighted with Rotorua. They wandered about in squads admiring the sights. Tho Maoris were mad with excitement, The Wairoa Geyser made play for the visitors. Tho train is expected to make a fast trip down soas to arrive here at 6 80 to-night.

Midland Railway Commission Wellington, This Day

The vacancies on the Midland Railway Commission caused by tho resignation of Messrs Morrison and Back have been

filled by Jas. M'Kcrrow of the Land Purchase Department succeeds Back and John Graham M.fl.R, replaces Morrison, while Roderick M'Kenzie becomes Chairman of the Commission, The Indian Troops.

A statement is in circulation based on a rumour current at Mangaweka, tint tho foundation of one of the piers of the Makohine viaduct has slipped, which will necessitate further delay in completion of tho work. The Minister of Public Works however, has received no information on the subject and considers the rumour unfounded.

Baden-Powell to Mete Kingi Wangano, This Day

An interesting letter has been received by the Native Chief Tadarangi Mete Kingi, from Baden-Powell, acknowledging the receipt of a Mao.i relic of prehistoric value sent on the occasion of the relief of Mafeking. In tho course of the letter, Powell says, "it was a great, surprise to all at Mafeking after the relief to tind the defence there had been so highly thought of by their fellow-countrymen. I fear my own share of the defence has been overrated."

Liquor Trading at Clutha

Dunkdin, Feb. 18

At Tapanui, within tho Clutha prohibition district-, Mr Stratford S M. was engaged hearing cases of allcdgcd sly grog selling against James O'Dowd, who was first charged with selling liquor on Monday. The principal witness was a photograph canvasser named Fearnley, in polico pay. He deposed ordering four drinks for himself and three others. The evidence of other witnesses was doubtful, and defendant explicitly denied the evidence of Fearnley. The case was dismissed.

The Federal Commission. CimiSTcnoßCn, February 18

At tho sitting of the Federation Commission after luncheon, Mr David Thoma 3, auctioneer and grain agent of Ashburton, gave evidence to the effect that he is not in favour of Federation, as if New Zealand joined she would be running her neck into a nooso from which she could not afterwards withdraw.
