Coal Export

Westport, Feb. 17.

The coal output from Westport last week was 6674 tons, of which the West* port Goal Company shipped 6,006 tons 13 owt, and the Westport Co-opeoative Co 67 tons 7owt.

Fat il Accident. Napier, Feb. 17.

Joseph Davies, a single man about 50 yean of age, was killed by the overturning of a cart, which he was driving at West Clive.

Cable Repairing.

Waka. Feb. 17.

The sea having moderated, the cable repairing steamer Recorder returned here this morning, and picked up the men who were left, and sailed for Wellington at 8 o’clock.

The Standard Insurance Company’s Income for the year 1900 including last year’s balance was £94,707 and expenditure £79,514. A dividend at the rate of 71 per cent was declared. Morrison M.H E. 111. Dunedin, This Day.

Morrison, M.H.E. Chairman of the Midland Railway Commission, has resigned owing to an affeciion of the throat, which had lately developed serious symptoms.

Fatal Accident.

Christchurch, February 17.

A sad accident occured last night by which Branchmin Benjamin Berry, of the Christchurch Fire Brigade, lost his life. The brigade was called to attend a small fire in Sydenham. Just after the Deluge steamer left the station Berry attempted to mount while it was in motion, missed his hold and fell. The hind wheel of the engine and the reel went over his stomach, mangling him frightfully. He was got into a cab, but expired before reaching the hospital. Deceased was 35 years of age, and loaves a wife and six young children. He was one ot the smartest men in the brigade, of which he had been a member tea years, and very energetic in assisting anything for charity. At the inquest to-day, t-o verdict was “accidental death.” A rider was added to the effect that notices should be posted at stations warning firemen not to get on the engine while it is in motion.
