At the Court yesterday, James Bourns was committed for trial, for the attempted murder of J. B. Hickson on the sth at Wavcrley. Hickson is a clerk of the Bank of New South Wales, Patea. About ten miles from Wavcrley, as he was returning to Patea (after closing the branch of the bank at Wavcrley, with a bag containing £3lB cash and £'2ll in cheques), he heard someone following him. looking round, Bourns fired arevolverpsint. blank at him five or six yards away. Hvo jumped on one side of the road, when another sbot was fired, one piercing his coat, the powder going on his ear. Constable Luckily made his appearance and Bourns decamped, hiding in: a swamp, where eventually he was captured. A revolver with two chambers empty was found near. Accusod worked at Wavcrley 18 months .ago as a rouseabout, ab which time the bank was broken into and £56 stolen. On qhe 6th December last a futile attempt was made to break into the bank at the same place.
