WESTLAND EDUCATION BOARD.
The special committee appointed by the Westland Education Board to consider the schedule of increased salaries as submitted by tho Department met yesterday. It was di cided to ask thß Department to increase the salaries of the assistant masters at Hokitika and Kumara, and tho first assistant mistress at the same schools and at Woodstock. The necessity for a proportionate increase in the salary of tho Secretary and Inspector was also urged, and it was resolved to write to tho Department accordingly, also to point out that the Okura school had beon presumably inadvertently omitted from tho list. Tho other proposed increases were considered by the committee to bo equitable, but it was recognised that while tho salaries of assistants were equal to the average paid in the colony, they were not on as liberal scale as the salaries of tho higher teachers. The teachers of the aided schools will welcome the addition made in their case as the capitation will not be less than £5.
