SWIMMING SPORTS.
The first annual sports meeting of the Greymouth Swimming Club was held at Oobden yesterday. Notwithstanding that the weather was drizzly, there was a large number of spectators present. The fancy swimming by Mr Hamilton and the dive off Oobden bridge by himself and Mr Truscott were groatly appreciated. Too much praise cannot be given to the officials for the able way in which they carried out their services. Subjoined are the results: — Maiden, 100 yards. P. Cocks (scr.) 1 E. Guinness (11 sec.) ... 2 B. Phillips (7 sees) 3 This was won by a yard and a half after a very exciting race. Time 1 min 30 sees. Neatest Header, Lord 1 M'Connell 2 The winner took a Bplendid plunge. Boy's Each, 50 yards. Christophers (scr.) 1 Stitt (scr.) 2 O'Reilly (2 sees.) 3 Won after a close finish. Time 52 2-5 sees.
InTERPROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP, 220 Yards.
•T. M. Hamilton (Grey) 1 P. Truscott (East Christ-church) ... 2 J. Jack also started. The time in this race was given as 2min oOsee, but either the time was taken wrong or it was not the right distance. The New Zealand record is 2min 53scc, and to beat that record by 3 sees is a marvellous feat. / We understand that it has been decided to measure the distance again. Corfu Dive.
Mabiu . ~, '... 1 McConnell ... 2 Breast Stroke, 50 Yabds. -- Mabiu (4i sees) 1 B. Phillip 3(6 sees) and B. Collins (6 sees) tied for second place. Subsepuently it was run off again, which resulted in another dead heat. Time, 37 sees. ■
Schoolboys Race, 50 Yards. Harper (8 sees) 1 Cocks (5 sees) 2 Christophers (scr) 8 Won with a few feet to spare. Time, 44 sees.
Ladies' Bracelet, 180 yards. W. Cocks, 34 sees 1 A. Truscott, 6 sees 2 J. Hamilton, scr 3 Won easily. Time, 2 mins 6 4-5 sees. Boys' Diving. The Boys" Diving Competition was won by C. Cook. Final, 100 yards. F. Truscott, 2 sees 1 M'Glasham, 23 sees 2 B. Collins, 19 sees 3 The starter reported that Truscott started 8 sees too soon and Cocks 3 sees. It was subsequently decided to award the prize to M'Glasham.
The visitors were in the evening entertained at a smoke concert at the Wharf Hotel at which a number of toasts and songs were given.' The company broke up at a late hour after having spent a most pleasant evening.
