IMPERIAL TROOPS AT WANGANUI.

Wanganui, Feb. 11,
Wanganui rose to the occasion and gave tho Imperial troops under Major Askquith a splendid reception. The function took place on the picturesque race course, which was crammed by thousands of enthusiastic sight seers. Tho trooops detrained at the crossing near the course and marched straight over. The ceremony in front of the grandstand was very impressive.
Addresses were delivered by Mayor Hatrick and the Hon. »J. G. Ward and Mayor Topia, an old Maori chief.
The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea, and after mingling with tho crowd the men fell in and marched to tho drill hall, from where they were dismissed and taken to the various places arranged for billeting. Tho streets to-night are filled with soldiers, tho business places being lit up as on Saturday nights. At the ceremony the Maoris (some 300) danced hakas, war dances, poi dances, and Topia, on their behalf, presented Col. Wyndam, through Mayor Asquith, with a valuable Maori mat, and huia feathers.
Tho troops leave for Wellington at 8.30 to-morrow, stopping at Palmerston North on route
