Intense Heat. Sydney, February 8. The colony is suffering from a heat wave. Many inland towns record over 100 and Mount Hope 118. Silver Mine Closed. Adelaide, February 8, Owing to a fall in prices in silver and lead and the high cost of working, the directors of the Broken Hill Junction have decided to close the mine for the present. Memorial to the Queen. An influential riit'ctiltg in the Town Hall decided to establish a maternity home as a memorial of the Queen. Some handsome donations have been received already. Federal Cabinet Meeting.
The Federal Cabinet had a lengthy sitting to-day. A number of important matters were discussed. It is announced that in the majority of cases ho finality was reached.
It was decided to take over the Post Office and Defence Departments on March Ist.
The Cabinet ratified Mr Barton’s cable to Mr Chamberlain in reference to the New Hebrides. They favored action in respect to the other Pacific Islands,
