Railway Changes.
Wellington, January 31.
Piper, Traffic Manager at Groymouth, succeeds Buxton (transferred to Auckland) as Traffic Manager at Wanganui, and Crombie now Stationmaster at Dunedin. secures Traffiic Manager at Groymouth. The following arc the changes among stationmasters : A. Duncan, from Oamaru to Dunedin. P. A. Duncan from'Gore to Oamaru. H. J. Day from Hawera to Gore. J. May from Eakaia to Hawera. The Christchurch Exhibition. Cheistbhurch, January 31. The Exhibition will bo formally closed to-night. It has been a great financial success. Over a quarter of a million people have passed through the turnstiles in addition to season ticket holders who numbered five thousand. The last few d»ya the prices of admission were reduced and the buildings have been thronged.
Federal Commission. Wellington, This Day. In connection with the sittings of the Federal Commission, which opens in Invercargill on February stb, the evidence is to be taken at each centre of the presidents of the Chambers of Commerce, Industrial Associations, and Trades and Labor Councils, as well as from leading commercial men. New Zealand Insurance Company. Auckland, January 30. The New Zealand Accident Insurance Coy has attained its majority and held its 21st annual meeting of shareholders today. The balance-sheet shows the Coy to be in a very strong financial position. £3OOO was transferred to the reserve fund and £IOOO to contingent liabilities. The net premium-.’ income for the year amounts to £2BOO (?), compensation paid and provided for to £20,000. The usual dividend was declared. Amnesty to Italian Sailors. Mr Geo. Fisher, M.H.R., Italian Con" sul, received a communication from the Minister of Marine, Home, announcing the decree that has been issued granting an amnesty to all sailors of the Italian Mercantile Marine who may have deserted from their ships previous to November, 1900. Memorial Church Service. Archbishop Redwood has intimated that he will not take part in the united memorial service on Saturday. A special service attended by 40 priests will, however, be held.
